Damon did fight, he fought really hard.  He asked Jeremy to kill him because even as he fought he didn’t know whether he could throw it off completely, so he asks Jeremy to kill him. Jeremy was wounded and an easy kill, but Damon didn’t kill him, he stops and orders Jer to take him out.  He apologizes to Elena because he has to leave her and she’ll have a brother who killed him.  Damon fought, he fought hard.
